Unfortunately, my experience was far below expectations and did not align with the advertised standards of the property or the Selina brand. Upon arrival, I discovered that the hotel was in the process of closing, which drastically impacted the quality of my stay. Below are the specific issues I encountered: Misleading Advertising: The property did not look anything like the online pictures, which was extremely disappointing and felt misleading. Poor Room Conditions: The room was moldy, old, and not well-cleaned. Additionally, there was a pervasive bad smell throughout. Lack of Basic Amenities: There was no hot water, and the windows could not be properly closed. Non-functional Facilities: The on-site restaurant was shut down, which was highly inconvenient as the nearest restaurants were a 15-minute walk away on an unsafe road. No Activities or Social Life: One of the key attractions of staying at Selina properties is their vibrant social and activity offerings, none of which were available during my stay. Wi-Fi Issues: There was no Wi-Fi available for one evening, further diminishing the quality of my experience. False Description: The property was advertised as oceanfront, but it was not beach accessible as implied. Overall, the stay was far from the relaxing start to my Costa Rica vacation I had anticipated. Everything that Selina is known for—vibrant social life, reliable amenities, and high-quality accommodations—was entirely absent. I could have stayed at a significantly better hotel for the price I paid. To make matters worse, I was not informed about the hotel’s closure or the lack of amenities until check-out when I inquired about these issues. This lack of transparency was unacceptable.

This place is unfortunately nothing like other Selina’s I have stayed at in San Jose and Mexico City 😢 it felt like a run-down, poorly operated version of what once may have been a great experience. It’s a decent cheap hostel but be aware of what you’re getting! 🙏 The pros: 1. The coworking space had good WiFi and was pretty empty, allowing us to take zoom calls when needed. 2. The room had a comfy bed and good air conditioning (we booked a solo room). The cons: 1. Promised amenities simply don’t exist — our room didn’t have a desk like the pictures showed. There is no promised welcome drink and they no longer do happy hour (?? For reasons nobody on the staff can explain). Half the menu items are not available at the restaurant, including any coffee drinks except self-serve black coffee. The promised activities don’t all happen - we were excited for game night, it was on the schedule, but it simply didn’t happen and there was no announcement. 2. Basically nothing works — from the coffee maker in the room to the shampoo bottles to the bikes that you’re supposed to be able to rent 3. The staff is unengaged and unwelcoming. Nobody gave us any sort of tour/orientation, and nobody had answers or remedies to why anything didn’t work 4. The restaurant food was actively not good (we had a couple breakfasts there) and half the menu items aren’t available Location is average — It’s a 15 min walk into town and close to Cocles beach!

The Selina offers the best of everything! The rooms are awesome: I was in a dorm. The bed was comfy and the people I was sharing the room with were very nice. Also, they have AC, and I slept very well because of that. I sweat everywhere in Costa Rica other than my room at the Selina 💯 The service is on point: the staff are very friendly and willing to answer any questions you may have. The rooms are always clean and the restaurant is nice. And last, the location is perfect! It is right on the beach, and that was my favorite part! Thank you, Selina!

The hostel Selina stole $300 from me. After booking a bed in advance I decided to cancel the booking and go somewhere else. Online the cancelation policy states, “cancelations made 3 before booking will not be charged” I took this on honor that I would not be charged as I canceled 5 days out. They however, having my card for the booking fee, charged my card the full price for the length of my stay. This is false advertising on par with theft. And of course, they would not reply to my messages regarding this injustice.

I really like the selina chain but this has been my least favourite one. There is music pounding from 10am until 10pm, that's unescabable. You can still hear it in your room and there's no where to sit in the whole place where you can't hear it. You have to leave the hostel if you want quiet. Walls are super thin and few things are slightly broken. The staff are sweet. Comfy beds and great AC. People's food have been stolen from the fridge which is a big deal as its a pricey area for food. The location is on an amazing quiet part of the beach but that comes with the trade off that you need to factor in the cost of bikes or tut tuts if you want to travel to and from town after dark. Up to you.
